I had my van electrics and solar panel fitted by DRD Conversions back in February, and after several trips away since, I can honestly say everything has been working flawlessly. The quality of work is outstanding, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Dean’s customer service is second to none — it’s been the best experience I’ve had since starting my van conversion journey. He took the time to go through all the available options, explaining things clearly and offering honest advice based on what would best suit my needs, rather than just upselling. The workmanship is genuinely top-notch. Every detail has been done with care and precision, and it’s clear that Dean takes real pride in his work. It’s rare to find someone with such skill and integrity in this line of work. Even though I’m based in Manchester, I’ll be returning to Barnsley for any future work on my van. I highly recommend DRD Conversions to anyone looking for reliable, professional, and high-quality conversion services. You’ll be in safe hands.

DRD Conversions did a great job on my installation. I'd done a partial conversion myself and brought my van to Dean to install flooring, cupboards, R&R bed, partial electrics, water and orgonise gas safe install. Dean was very helpful; giving advice on components and suppliers, nothing was too much trouble even when I changed my mind on details and components a few times. Dean worked to deadlines I required and was competitive with his pricing. I'm very happy with the service I received from DRD Conversions.
DRD Conversions specializes in creating high-spec, off-grid campervans. They have a strong reputation for their [bespoke electrical systems](/services/electrical-systems). This means they frequently install complex solar panel arrays and high-capacity lithium battery banks for extended travel. In practice, their team focuses heavily on custom cabinet work and functional, durable layouts designed for full-time van life, rather than simple weekend setups.
The company primarily works with medium to large panel vans. Most builds are based on the Ford Transit, VW Transporter T5 and T6, and the Vauxhall Vivaro platform. While these are their preferred base vehicles due to familiarity, DRD Conversions may consider other vans like the Mercedes Sprinter or Fiat Ducato after an initial consultation to assess the project's feasibility and scope.
The process at DRD Conversions begins with an in-depth consultation. This is to understand the customer's vision and specific needs for the van. Following this, the company develops a detailed design proposal, often including 3D models to help visualize the final layout. A deposit is then required to secure a build slot in their workshop schedule, with the final balance due upon completion.
Yes, customization is a core part of the service at DRD Conversions. Clients have significant input on the final layout and design. They can select from a wide range of materials, finishes, and fabrics for cabinetry, worktops, and upholstery. This collaborative approach ensures the finished van truly reflects the owner's style and functional requirements for life on the road.
DRD Conversions provides a 12-month warranty covering all aspects of their conversion workmanship. This protects against any defects in the construction or installation of components. It’s important to note that individual appliances, like fridges or heaters, are covered by their own manufacturer's warranties. The company assists clients in navigating any claims for these specific products.
Yes, safety and compliance are priorities for the company. While DRD Conversions handles the design and installation, any work requiring formal certification is signed off by qualified third-party professionals. For most builds, this means a certified electrician inspects the 240V mains hookup system, and a Gas Safe registered engineer certifies any [LPG installations](/services/lpg-certification).
A typical full conversion includes everything needed for comfortable travel. This covers full insulation and sound deadening, wall paneling, and flooring. It also includes a complete electrical system with leisure batteries, a kitchen galley with a sink and hob, and a fixed bed or convertible seating area. As a result, water tanks and custom-built storage are also standard components in their comprehensive builds.
The company offers both full and [partial conversion services](/services/part-conversions). While they are known for complete, turnkey builds, they also handle smaller, specific jobs. Popular partial services include pop-top roof installations, window fitting, and the design of complex off-grid electrical systems for DIY builders who need expert help with that specific stage of their project.
DRD Conversions structures payments in stages throughout the build process. An initial deposit is required to book a slot and begin the design phase. A second, larger payment is typically due when the van arrives at the workshop and work commences. The final balance must then be paid upon completion of the conversion, just before the vehicle is handed over to the customer.
