Consensus Verdict

4.6/5
(2,089 reviews)
After reading reviews and speaking with owners, the consensus is that this blanket is impressively warm for how lightweight and packable it is. Customers consistently praise how it packs down small for hiking, making it a super cosy layer for cold nights on the trail. While a few people mention it can lose some feathers, the overwhelming feedback is that it's a fantastic, easy-to-carry piece of kit.

This is one of those bits of kit that quickly earns its place in the van. It's impressively warm for its tiny packed size, a feature customers consistently praise, with one 5-star reviewer calling it "super cosy for the cold nights" . While it's fantastically lightweight and easy to carry, a few users have noted minor feather loss over time .

Our Verdict

Who should buy this?

This blanket is a brilliant choice for vanlifers and campers who prioritise low weight and a small pack size above all else. If you're into wild camping, hiking, or just need a versatile, warm layer that won't eat up precious cupboard space, it's ideal. As one verified buyer put it, it's perfect for hiking as it "doesn't take up too much room in my backpack" .

Who should consider alternatives?

If you're after a plush, generously filled duvet for permanent use on your van bed, this might feel a bit thin. A 3-star reviewer noted it's "not very well filled" for the price . Those who are particularly rough on their gear might also be concerned about the minor feather loss mentioned by some and may favour a more robust synthetic alternative.

Value for money

At £65, its value is debatable and depends on your needs. For ultralight enthusiasts, the warmth-to-weight ratio is excellent. However, for casual use, some may question the price, especially given the feedback that it feels underfilled. One buyer felt it wasn't what they "expected for the price" , suggesting it might not meet everyone's value expectations.

Our honest take

As fellow campers, we'd say this is a great, versatile blanket that genuinely delivers on being warm and lightweight . It's the kind of thing you'll be glad you have stashed away for chilly evenings by the fire or as an extra layer on a cold night. While the concerns about fill level and feather loss are valid , the overwhelming majority of users are chuffed with its performance.

How Well Is It Built?

TL;DR

Constructed from a 20D ripstop nylon shell, this blanket feels both lightweight and reasonably durable for outdoor use. The RDS-certified duck down provides the insulation, though some users have noted it can appear underfilled. Minor feather loss has been reported, but overall build quality is considered good by most.

When you first get your hands on this blanket, its low weight is the most striking feature. The outer shell is made from 20D ripstop nylon, a common choice in lightweight camping gear that offers a decent balance between durability and weight-saving.

Filling and Loft

Inside, you'll find RDS-certified sustainable duck down. This is what gives the blanket its impressive warmth. However, a recurring theme, even in positive reviews, is the loft. One 3-star reviewer was direct, stating "it’s not very well filled it seems" . A 5-star buyer also anticipated this, noting the blanket is "likely to be thin and that it needs to be allowed to ‘fluff up’" . This suggests that while warm, it might not have the plush, lofty feel some expect from a down product.

Durability Concerns

While most find the quality good , a couple of reviews mention minor issues. The most common is slight feather loss over time. A 5-star review mentioned they "Lost a few feathers of the last few weeks" , and a 4-star review echoed this sentiment . This isn't a deal-breaker for most and is fairly common with down gear, but it's something to be aware of for long-term durability.

How Does It Perform?

TL;DR

Performs exceptionally well for its weight, providing significant warmth that impresses most users. It's described as "super cosy for the cold nights" and ideal for wild camping. It packs down very small into its stuff sack, making it highly portable for hiking, festivals, or stashing in a campervan.

In the field, this blanket's performance really shines, especially when you consider its size and weight. It punches well above its class in the warmth department.

Warmth and Comfort

This is where the blanket gets its highest praise. Users consistently report it being very warm and cosy. One 4-star reviewer found it "Perfect for camping during colder weather as it keeps you very warm" . Another, who used it while hiking the Camino, called it "Super cosy for the cold nights" . It's clear that for its intended purpose—providing a significant boost of warmth without the bulk of a traditional sleeping bag or duvet—it excels.

For some campers, it's even become a replacement for their sleeping bag in milder conditions. A verified buyer proclaimed it "Better than a sleeping bag" and "Ideal for wild camps" , highlighting its convenience and comfort.

Packability and Portability

For van life, backpacking, or even just a day out, space is always a premium. This blanket understands the assignment. It packs down neatly into its included stuff sack, taking up minimal room. Reviewers love this aspect, with comments like "packs down well in it's stuff sack" and "Klein, passt in jeden Rucksack" (Small, fits in any rucksack) . This ease of transport makes it a versatile piece of kit you're more likely to bring along, whether it's for an evening around the campfire or as an emergency layer in the car.

What Features Stand Out?

TL;DR

Standout features include its use of RDS-certified sustainable duck down and the lightweight 20D ripstop nylon shell. It comes with a practical stuff sack that allows it to pack down small, a feature praised by users. However, it lacks features like snaps or clips to wear it as a poncho.

The feature set of the Horizon Hound GR-20 is simple and focused, favouring performance and portability over bells and whistles.

Core Materials

The main feature is undoubtedly the filling: RDS-certified (Responsible Down Standard) sustainable duck down. For ethically-minded campers, this is a significant plus, ensuring the down comes from animals that have not been subjected to unnecessary harm. This is paired with the 20D ripstop nylon, which provides a degree of water and wind resistance, crucial for unpredictable outdoor conditions.

Portability

A key practical feature is the included stuff sack. It's not an afterthought; it's essential to the product's appeal. Customers frequently mention how well the blanket packs away, making it genuinely easy to carry . One hiker specifically bought it because it "packs down well in it's stuff sack and doesn't take up too much room" .

What's Missing?

Compared to some other camping blankets on the market, this one is quite basic. It lacks snaps or clips that would allow you to wear it hands-free like a poncho, a feature some campers find useful for moving around a chilly campsite. While no reviewers specifically called this out, it's a feature we've come to appreciate on other models. The simplicity keeps the weight down, but it's a trade-off to be aware of.

What They Love
  • Excellent space-saver in the van

How Does It Compare to Alternatives?

TL;DR

Against synthetic-fill blankets, this down option offers far superior warmth for its weight and pack size, though at a higher price. Compared to premium down quilts from cottage brands, it's more affordable but some users feel it lacks the same generous fill and loft, making it a mid-range choice.

In the world of camping blankets, the Horizon Hound GR-20 sits in a competitive middle ground. It offers significantly better performance than cheaper, bulky synthetic blankets, which can't match its warmth-to-weight ratio or packability. For many, it's a worthy upgrade, with one user finding it "Better than a sleeping bag" for their specific needs . However, when compared to high-end down quilts from specialist outdoor brands, it may fall short. These premium options often feature higher fill-power down and more technical designs, but come with a much steeper price tag. This blanket strikes a balance, offering the benefits of down insulation at a more accessible price, though with the trade-off that it can feel underfilled to some .

Lightweight, very warm, packs small

Bought for hiking along the Camino in not so good weather. Packs down well in it's stuff sack and doesn't take up too much room in my backpack. Super cosy for the cold nights. I used it inside my sleep sack.

Summer down camping blanket

The blanket in the stuff sac looks very good. I haven’t used it yet. I will be using it for summer camping. I know that the blanket is likely to be thin and that it needs to be allowed to ‘fluff up’ to let the down filling to fill out and be effective.

It’s ok, it’s not very well filled it seems…or not what I expected for the price. Time will tell what it’s like in use as I’ve only used it indoors, it might be ok on a mild night

Happily surprised

Just used this for the first time. At the first unpacking I was skeptical this would be warm or even hold up but decided to just give it shot. I backpack and kayak camp so size wise I love how lightweight and small this packs up, makes it perfect for conservative packing. I used this in 55-60 degree weather. I ended up actually being warm with this on and needed to air out, that’s not a con at all...
